No matter which side of the world you are from, time management is a topic that everyone has dealt with but the sad reality is, people are still struggling to take control of their time be it at work or home.  We have become so comfortable lately in hiding behind the words, “I didn’t have enough time.”  But that is not always the case, the question you should be asking yourself is, am I spending my time productively?  I will share a few tips to help you be in control of your time.

According to Entrepreneur, there are only three ways to spend time, thoughts, conversations and actions.

Regardless of the type of business you own, your work will be composed of those three items.   As an entrepreneur, you may be frequently interrupted or pulled in different directions. While you cannot eliminate interruptions you do get a say on how much time you will spend on them and how much time you will spend on thoughts, conversations and actions that will lead to success that will lead you to success.

  1. Plan your day

Always plan the day ahead. Have a fixed structure on how you want your day to look like. You can do this by scheduling your tasks or simply ticking off that to do list. Before the day ends you can reflect on your daily tasks and how you did for the day which will help you plan the next day. Without a plan for the day, you are likely to jump on to whatever task that comes your way which is a very dangerous method of managing your time.

  1. Only attend to important mails and phone calls

Not every email and phone call you respond to during office hours is important. We all have those friends who won’t stop messaging you on email or keep sending you BBM texts. Be disciplined and switch off the messenger on your emails and you do not have to respond to every single email you receive unless it is important. The same applies to calls, you can set a time where you check all your mails and return all your calls. If you can be that disciplined, your day can run very smoothly.

  1. Social networks can be a big distraction-Stay away

This is simple, unless you use social media for business, avoid it! Thanks to scheduling tools you do not need to login to these pages to post content. Set a time daily where you check pages and monitor them. Make use of scheduling tools rather than being online all day long. Believe me that can be very distracting! Before you know it. It will be 6pm and you haven’t achieved much at all!

  1. Other people’s time is important, respect it.

When you know you have meetings or have to be somewhere at a certain time, always be there on time. This is not only professional but if you value people’s time, they will do the same to you.

  1. Spend your time on things that are worth it

It’s very easy to spend time on things that are less important, that is why it is important to draw up a list of your priorities and tasks that you need to complete first. You also need to be able to differentiate between things that are total time wasters, you do not need that.

When it comes to time we are all equal and in order to manage your time all you need is discipline and dedication.
